Situated 18 km away from Gura Humorului, the Cacica salt works represent an important attraction for visitors.
Begun by the order of Empress Maria Theresa, the salt works were manually dug out and opened in 1791. There are 8200 galleries that were all manually dug out, reinforced with wood and in a perfect condition today. Among these, the following are renowned, the Church Holy Barbara (Varvara), praying site for all the miners who worked there, place were even today service is held, the BALL ROOM or festivity room (44 m underground, today tennis and volley course) and the small salt lake (38 m deep) where some time ago people were putting their boats to use.
THE ROMAN CATHOLIC CATHEDRAL is another point of attraction in the area. The monument impresses by architecture, size and religious importance. Each year on the 15-th of August, the greatest pilgrimage of Moldavian Catholics takes place here. Years ago, a special train link existed from Vienna to Cacica, especially for this event. In 1997 the cathedral was declared a national sanctuary a thus became the center of the Catholic world in Bucovina.
